End User License Agreement

Effective August 12, 2026  ·  Version 2.0  ·  Applies to Space Cowboy 1.x for Windows, sold direct at ctrlcolab.com

This is the agreement between you and CTRL Colab LLC covering the Space Cowboy software itself — what you may do with it, how the license works, and the terms that come with it. It is written to be read. If a sentence here is unclear, write to us and we will explain it.

Please read section 6 carefully. Space Cowboy can permanently delete files. You are responsible for what you delete.

1 License Grant

You buy a license to use Space Cowboy. You do not buy the software itself.

Subject to these terms, CTRL Colab LLC grants you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, worldwide license to install and use Space Cowboy on the computers described in section 3, for as long as you like. The license covers use for your own purposes, whether personal or at work — there is no separate “commercial” tier.

By installing or using Space Cowboy you accept these terms. If you do not accept them, do not install it — and if you have already paid, ask for a refund under the Refund Policy.

2 How Licensing Works

Your license is a file. There is no activation server, and the app never phones home.

When you buy Space Cowboy we generate a license file with your purchase email address embedded in it and send it to you. Space Cowboy reads that file on your own computer. It does not validate it against a server, register your machine, or check in periodically, because there is no service for it to check in with.

Keep your license file somewhere you can find it again. If you lose it, email us from your purchase address and we will send you another.

3 Permitted Installations

Install it on the computers you personally use.

Your license covers 3 installations for one person. That number is stated in your license file. It is not technically enforced — we rely on your good faith.

A desktop and a laptop that both belong to you is exactly the intent. Reinstalling after a rebuild, or moving to a new machine and retiring the old one, does not use up an installation and does not require anything from us. Handing your license file to your team, your department, or the internet is not the intent, and doing so is a breach of this agreement even though nothing will stop you.

If you need to cover a team, write to us. We would rather sell you what you need than have you feel awkward about it.

4 Versions Covered, and Upgrades

Your purchase covers Space Cowboy 1.x, including every point update we release in that line.

Because Space Cowboy is sold as a direct download, updates come from us. When we ship a 1.x update, your existing license file opens it and there is nothing to pay. A future 2.0 will be announced with its own upgrade terms at that time; existing 1.x purchases are honoured on the terms in effect at the time of purchase.

We make no promise about how often we will release updates, or that any particular feature will ever be built. What you are buying is the software as it exists today, plus whatever we choose to improve about it.

Space Cowboy runs on Windows 10 and Windows 11, 64-bit (x64). If a future version of Windows breaks something we will do our best to fix it, but we cannot guarantee that Space Cowboy will run on operating system versions released after your purchase.

5 System Access and Administrator Rights

The app runs as you. One small helper elevates, briefly and visibly, when you scan a whole drive.

The Space Cowboy application itself runs unelevated, with your own account’s permissions. Scanning a whole NTFS drive at full speed requires reading the volume’s file table, which Windows only permits with administrator rights — so that one job is isolated in a small, separate helper program. When you start a drive scan, Windows shows you a standard UAC prompt for that helper; while the scan is open, the helper keeps the picture live by streaming file-system change events to the app, and it exits when the scan session ends. It performs no deletions, makes no changes to your disk, and never runs in the background outside a scan you started. Scanning an individual folder does not use the helper and shows no prompt.

Deletions are always performed by the unelevated app, as you, through the standard Windows shell — never by the elevated helper.

6 Data Loss; Deletion; “As Is” — IMPORTANT

You are solely responsible for selecting which files and folders to delete and for the consequences of those deletions. Space Cowboy’s safety features — system-location protections, the Recycle Bin default, and the confirmation countdown — are provided as a convenience and do not guarantee against data loss. You should not rely on them as your sole safeguard.

You are strongly advised to maintain current backups of any important data before deleting files using the Software. CTRL Colab is not responsible for the loss, corruption, or unrecoverability of any data resulting from your use of the Software.

Scan results are a snapshot, not an audit: what Space Cowboy can see depends on your account’s permissions, the drive’s file system, and how Windows reports it. Sizes can differ from other tools (allocated versus logical size, hard links, compressed and cloud-placeholder files). Do not rely on Space Cowboy for forensic, compliance, or capacity-planning purposes where an inaccurate number has consequences.

7 Restrictions

You may not:

Nothing in this section restricts your rights under the licenses of the third-party components listed in section 9, which govern those components on their own terms.

8 Ownership — and Your Data

The software is ours. Everything it looks at is yours.

Space Cowboy, its source code, its design, its artwork, and its name remain the property of CTRL Colab LLC and its licensors. This agreement licenses the software to you; it does not sell it, and all rights not expressly granted are reserved.

Your files are yours, and so is the map Space Cowboy draws of them. We claim no ownership of, license to, or interest in any file on your computer or any scan the app produces. We have no access to any of it — there is no account, no sign-in, no telemetry, and no analytics service. Crash and diagnostic reports are written locally and are never sent automatically; the bug-report button opens an email draft that you review and choose whether to send. The Privacy Policy describes all of this in full.

9 Third-Party and Open-Source Components

Space Cowboy is built with the components below. Each is used under its own license, and those licenses govern those components rather than this agreement. Where a license requires it, the applicable notices and license texts are included with the software.

ComponentLicense
Tauri 2 (application framework)MIT or Apache-2.0
Microsoft Edge WebView2 RuntimeMicrosoft license terms — proprietary, not open source
ReactMIT
Rust standard library and crates (windows-rs, windows-sys, serde, rayon, ed25519-dalek, base64, bitflags, rustc-hash, thiserror, tracing, bincode, and their dependencies)MIT and/or Apache-2.0; ed25519-dalek is BSD-3-Clause

One of these is worth calling out: the Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime is not open-source software — it is a Windows component distributed under Microsoft’s own license terms, which apply to that component in addition to this agreement. Everything else on the list is permissively licensed, which means the obligations are the ordinary ones: keep the copyright notices and the license texts intact.

10 Trademarks

“Space Cowboy”, “CTRL Colab”, and the associated logos and artwork are trademarks of CTRL Colab LLC. This agreement does not give you permission to use them. You may of course refer to Space Cowboy by name — in a review, an article, a tutorial, or a recommendation to a colleague — without asking us.

Windows and Microsoft are trademarks of Microsoft Corporation. Space Cowboy is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Microsoft.

11 Disclaimer of Warranty

We built Space Cowboy carefully and we use it ourselves. We cannot promise it is free of defects, and the law expects this section to be conspicuous, so here it is in the conventional form:

SPACE COWBOY IS PROVIDED “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE”, WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED. TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, CTRL COLAB LLC DISCLAIMS ALL WARRANTIES, INCLUDING THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, TITLE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT THE SOFTWARE WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED OR ERROR-FREE, THAT DEFECTS WILL BE CORRECTED, THAT SCAN RESULTS WILL BE COMPLETE, CURRENT, OR ACCURATE, OR THAT THE SOFTWARE WILL PREVENT ANY DATA LOSS.

Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of implied warranties, so parts of the above may not apply to you. Nothing here is intended to exclude a warranty or guarantee that cannot lawfully be excluded — see section 14.

12 Limitation of Liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, CTRL COLAB LLC WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR EXEMPLARY DAMAGES, OR FOR ANY LOSS OF PROFITS, REVENUE, DATA, OR BUSINESS, ARISING OUT OF OR RELATING TO THE SOFTWARE OR THIS AGREEMENT, EVEN IF WE HAVE BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.

OUR TOTAL AGGREGATE LIABILITY UNDER THIS AGREEMENT WILL NOT EXCEED THE AMOUNT YOU PAID FOR SPACE COWBOY.

Nothing in this section limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be limited. Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages, so parts of the above may not apply to you.

13 Term and Termination

This agreement takes effect when you install Space Cowboy and continues until it ends.

You can end it at any time by uninstalling the software and deleting your copies, including your license file.

We may end it if you materially breach it — for example by redistributing your license file — in which case you must stop using Space Cowboy and delete it. In practice we would write to you first. Sections 8 and 10–16 survive termination.

Termination does not by itself entitle you to a refund. Refunds are governed by the Refund Policy.

14 Purchases, Refunds, and Taxes

Space Cowboy is $9.99 USD, one time. It is not a subscription and there is nothing to renew or cancel.

Purchases are handled by Paddle.com Market Limited, our merchant of record. Paddle is the seller on your receipt: it takes the payment, issues the receipt and invoice, and calculates and remits VAT or sales tax according to your billing country. The tax added, if any, is itemised at checkout before you confirm.

Refunds are set out in full on the Refund Policy page, and that page — not this one — is the authoritative statement of them. The short version is fourteen days, any reason, no justification required.

15 Governing Law

CTRL Colab LLC is a New Mexico limited liability company. That is where the company was formed; it is a separate question from which law governs this agreement.

This agreement is governed by the laws of the State of California, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules, and the courts of that jurisdiction will have exclusive jurisdiction over disputes — subject to the paragraph below.

This does not take away rights you have where you live. If you are a consumer, you keep the mandatory protections of the law of your own country or state, and you can bring proceedings in your local courts where that law entitles you to. Where a mandatory local right conflicts with something in this agreement, the local right wins.

16 General

Entire agreement. This agreement, together with the Refund Policy and the Privacy Policy, is the whole agreement between you and CTRL Colab LLC about the Space Cowboy software. The Terms of Service cover our website and the purchase process; where the two overlap on a question about the software itself, this agreement prevails.

Severability. If a court finds any part of this agreement unenforceable, the rest continues to apply.

No waiver. If we do not enforce a term straight away, we have not given up the right to enforce it later.

Assignment. You may not transfer this agreement or your license to someone else. We may transfer it if the business is sold or reorganized, on the same terms.

Changes. These terms apply to the version of Space Cowboy you have. If we change them, the change applies to versions released afterwards; it does not retroactively alter the terms of a copy you already bought.
